Adjacent to a century-old summer lodge on a woodland lake, this retreat provides weekend accommodations, a home cinema, and room for an antique snooker table.
Four bedrooms are stacked in two stories on either end of a vaulted, “sleeping porch” with glass roof.
The roof is glazed with high performance glass to reduce winter heat loss and summer heat gain. Automatic external shades, controlled by a thermostat and wind sensor, roll down over glass roof to further stop solar radiation while attic exhaust fans keep the house cool.
A single twelve foot wide electric glass door opens onto the lake-side deck and disappears into a wall pocket. A matching screen provides bug-free cool summer sleeping.
The third floor is bridged with a glass floored catwalk between two upper bedrooms. Railings are custom fabricated steel.
Like a ship’s pilot house, the warming kitchen opens onto the water for light and lake views. Flooring and cabinets are finished in renewable bamboo.
